The Secret of the Poor

The Lord has spoken to me very profoundly throughout this year through the incredible witness of the poor – their faith, joy in the midst of suffering, and profound wisdom that puts to shame the “wise” of this world. Many of these encounters are very simple.

One woman that we visit is in her mid-80s. She has lost 10 of her 14 children and lives in extreme poverty. But one cannot fake the light and joy that she carries in her eyes and her smile – they are genuine. How, you might ask? This is the secret of the poor.
Another woman, suffering from multiply health conditions and with no money to buy medicine, frankly stated: “The greatest healing I’ve received in my life is giving up sin. That brought me true liberation.” She desires physical healing, but realizes that the spiritual healing she has received is worth much more. Where did she gain this wisdom? This is the secret of the poor.

A man that often comes to our door seeking food lives in a “house” made of a few sticks and tarps, and goes around the city looking for plastic to recycle. When one gives him a plate of food and sits down to listen to him, he launches into a marvelous prayer of thanksgiving for the goodness of God, one that has often brought me to tears by its passion, authenticity, and depth. Where did he receive this spirit of immense gratitude? This is the secret of the poor.
Finally, we discovered a neighbor this year – a man who is paralyzed in half of his body due to a stroke 8 years ago, who is cared for by his 96-year-old mother. They have nothing – they rely on others to bring them water, food, and all the necessities of life. I’ve watched this woman cook, clean, wash clothes by hand, and care for her son, all while she can barely stand. I’ve looked into the eyes of this man and seen that light and joy that I scarcely find in the eyes of the “privileged.” Where do they get this love? This is the secret of the poor.

I am constantly captivated by this secret. I feel privileged, day in and day out, to be let in on this secret that the poor carry in their hearts. I hope that, little by little, being in their presence and witnessing the marvel that they are, I can make this secret my own.
